National Recycling Week

Last modified: November 4, 2009 - 11:52 AM

Media Release 3 November 2009

Planet Ark's National Recycling Week (NRW) will run from 9-15 November. Bland Shire Council is encouraging the community to re-use old items for new purposes or take them to the West Wyalong Recycling bins located at the landfill site.

The bins that are used for recycling are new to the West Wyalong landfill and are an important step in the recycling process.

"The large bins can be filled with glass, plastic, aluminum cans and other containers. Once the bins are filled, they are taken to JR Richards' Material Recovery Facility in Orange" Wayne Broad, Facilities Coordinator, explained.

"Recycling has become very easy with the installation of these bins and best of all, it is totally free."

"Unfortuantely, these bins can not recycle paper or cardboard but we are lucky enough to have SPINS that specialise in those recyclable materials." Mr. Broad said.

SPINS provide recycling drop off and collection services for local businesses and house-holds. Any paper products, cardboard and plastic film can be dropped off at their site in Compton Road (Bypass Rd). A fee is charged for collection services.

The Lake Cowal Conservation Centre, with the support of Council, will be running a series of workshops and lessons in all Schools throughout the Shire to further promote the benefits of recycling. These workshops will allow all students to understand the importance of recycling and learn where recycling is possible in West Wyalong.

Kate Barret from the LCCC has created student centred lessons for Kindergarten to year 9 students,

"We have created outcomes that the students can achieve at school and at home but most importantly a lot of the lessons will be hands on so they really understand that recycling is something that can be started right away" Ms. Barrett said.

While there is no Kerbside recycling currently available in the Bland Shire, the first steps have been taken to ensure our communities have the chance to recycle most materials.

If you would like further information regarding recycling week, recycling opportunities or workshops within our schools, please phone Bland Shire Council or the Lake Cowal Conservation Centre.
