Road Trains Given Access to Bland Shire Roads

Last modified: October 27, 2009 - 12:22 AM

Media Release 27 October 2009

Bland Shire Council will be opening a number of roads for road train usage to assist in this year's harvest period.

The roads proposed for haulage routes have been assessed by Council staff following strict RTA guidelines, to ensure that the roads are safe to use by not only the road trains but general traffic.

A number of roads within the shire have been assessed as suitable for road train use; however, the greater number of roads to be gazetted at this stage are north of the Mid Western Highway as greater access is available to through routes due to the Lachlan Shire having no restrictions on road train access. Negotiations are proceeding with other Councils to the South to provide more roads in this section with through routes to the Southern area.

Council is still assessing other roads for use by road trains and will open more roads as they find them suitable.

These road openings will be on a trial period of three months from 1 November through to the 31 January, 2010. After this time, Council will reassess the success and safety of the operation before deciding if it becomes a permanent fixture.

Merv Penny, Director of Engineering for the Bland Shire, stated "Council and staff are keen to assist in opening up as many roads as possible due to the closure of rail links. However, the safety of other road users is paramount and the general public's safety is council's number one objective."

"It is important that all road train operators and drivers take particular care on Council roads during this trial period and be aware of school bus operations during the hours of 7.00am-9.00am and 3.30pm-5.30pm"

"Other road users should also be aware that during this trial period larger and longer trucks may be on the roads so please take appropriate precautions and drive accordingly" Mr Penny said.

A map is available at the Bland Shire Council customer service desk if interested parties would like to view specific roads that will be open to road trains. Roads include (but are not limited to) Wamboyne Road, Naradhan Road, Lake Road and Mona Gap Road.

Bland Shire Council and the RTA are working towards opening as many roads for road train usage as possible for the benefit of the local transport industry, farmers and haulage providers but the number one priority is the safety of all road users.

If you would like further information on the specific roads that will be open to road trains from the 1 November to 31 January, please phone Bland Shire Council on 02 6972 2266.
