Community Care Centre works Commence

Last modified: October 20, 2009 - 1:49 PM

Media Release 20 October 2009

After many years of planning and negotiating, the building of the Home and Community Care Centre in West Wyalong has commenced.

Bland Shire Council has received $1.5 million to build a purpose designed Dementia Day Care Centre, Meals on Wheels distribution facility and a Home and Community Care Centre to be located between the Waratah Village and West Wyalong Hospital. Council has committed further funds and in kind support.

The facilities will be first class and cater for elderly residents and younger people with a disability who need assistance in living at home as well as providing information on services available.

Through HACC, the Commonwealth and State Governments provide money to organisations to assist the following people who may be eligible to access these services:

  • frail aged people with a functional disability and their carers
  • younger people with functional disabilities and their carers
  • people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders

The site preparation and establishment of the centre began last week with much excitement.

‘We are really looking forward to a cutting edge facility that will place us at the fore front of aged care in regional NSW.' Ms Peta Robertson, Acting General Manager, said.

‘The building will greatly enhance our exisiting services which have been run out of less than perfect venues. More importantly they will provide a daycare centre, second to none in the Riverina, in which to provide respite for community members with a diagnosis of dementia and their carers. Along with our fully accredited ‘Village' and wonderful hospital, the precinct will provide a comprehensive list of services for the community.

Ms Robertson, who has worked in health and aged care for many years before joining the administration of Council, says the plans are very exciting and provide the best opportunity for enhanced service delivery due to the close association of professionals working together. As well as offices and service areas there will be a garden and home like environment for the daycare component. Importantly, there will be a comfortable place to drop in and discuss your needs over a cuppa.

Transport to and from the precinct will be arranged before opening of the complex and is expected to involve the Waratah Village vehicles as well as other community options.

The Home and Community Care Centre is expected to be completed in six months time, weather permitting, but a completion date will be announced closer to the time.
