McCann Park Re-opened

Last modified: May 18, 2009 - 10:11 AM

Media Release 18 May 2009

West Wyalong residents celebrated the re-opening of McCann Park on Saturday the 9th of May, 2009, after work was completed on the dam, gardens, play equipment and amenities.  Nearly 200 people turned out to see the new facilities that the park now has on offer and witness the opening of the dam and fitness equipment.

The town band entertained the crowd while they ate a hearty bacon and egg roll provided by Country Hope. It was a beautiful morning as Mayor Tony Lord spoke about the beginnings of McCann Park and how the park was named after Len McCann, a man that always put his community first. Len McCann served on Bland Shire Council for over 30 years and was also part of many community groups such as Rotary, Legacy and St Vincent's de Paul.

Mark Dodds from the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) told how pleasing it was to see a project, that had been funded by DECC, completed. The dam in the park is stage one of the Bland Shires Storm Water Management Scheme and is seen by DECC as a huge achievement.

Once both Mayor Lord and Mr Dodds had officially opened the park, families and friends enjoyed the sunshine and the parks surrounds. The new playground was put to the test with many youngsters trying out the swings and jungle Jim.  Fitness Instructor, Colleen Dore, and her assistant Tim Dore, showed how the fitness equipment is used correctly and got some energetic volunteers involved. The fitness equipment is part of a series that is located in parks along the green corridor walking and bike track.

The park also has BBQ facilities and plenty of tables and chairs to utilise. The toilet block in the park is currently being upgraded and work is hoped to be completed within the coming weeks.

McCann Park is part of an upgrade to all the parks in the Shire. Barnado Park, Church st, is currently under going renovations with work to be completed soon. Bland Shire Council has an aim of establishing quality facilities for the residents of the Bland Shire to create a sense of community pride. All of the parks have easy access and first class facilities which make it very easy for travelers to stop and break.
